`As most of you may know I celebrated my five year raw vegan anniversary last week. It seems like it was yesterday that I was just diving in head first into the lifestyle, but in reality this has been an incredible journey. It has been a journey of learning, living, and awakening of self. It is an exploration that is still ongoing and that I don’t plan to end. I do want to thank each and every one of you that has sent good vibes and support my way. The comments, messages, and likes are very well appreciated.
The number one question I have been getting asked lately is how does one go about changing from a standard American diet to a healthier plant-based one. I get asked all the time “Where do I begin?” , or “ How do I start this vegan thing?” Well there are a lot different ways to answer that question, but there are a few top things that I have learned though out my five year trek that I think everyone trying to transition should know.
1.) INCORPORATE: Start incorporating as much fresh (preferably organic) leafy greens, green juices, and most importantly fruit into your current diet as possible.
2.) REMOVE: Begin to remove harmful substances from your diet. This could mean a lot of different things to different people. If you’re coming from a standard American diet remove all meat and dairy from your diet. If you are coming from a junk food vegan diet that means immediately removing all of the processed vegan food like chips, ice-cream, pizza, and especially processed soy meat replacements from your plate. This doesn’t have to be removed all at once, but once you remove these things you’ll definitely see and feel the difference.
3.) FOOD COMBINING: This is a biggie and is the downfall of most trying to transition. Always try to eat your fruit first on an empty stomach and don’t ever mix your fruit with fatty foods (avocado, coconut, nuts). If you don’t combine your food properly you will be combated with poor digestion, a tummy ache, and fermentation in your gut.
4.) SIMPLICITY: Eat simply! Living foods are so nutrient dense you can eat simply and still receive all the nutrients and minerals that you need. You do not have to make fancy raw high fat meals to thrive. You will be just fine with a mono-meal ofmangoes, watermelon or even a large leafy green salad.
5.) ABUNDANCE: Abundance goes hand in hand with this lifestyle. Do not ever count calories at all. I have learned to always eat until you are satisfied. By doing this you will not get frustrated and return to your old eating habits.
